Groom Getting Ready
As a wedding photographer in Melbourne, I would generally start from the groom’s getting ready on the day. Not only because it would leave more time for the bride and bridesmaid to finish their makeup, but the groom needs to be at the ceremony location prior.
We usually spend 1-1.5 hour at the groom’s place to film his accessories, getting ready photos as well as family photos. However, depending on bridal party size and religious ceremony, the time might take longer.

“What is your wedding photography style?” This was a crucial question that popped up when Monica and Chris met me at the first meeting for their wedding photography inquiry.
My memory flashed back to a cozy late-summer day.
Monica had been planning her wedding for almost 12 months since Chris proposed to her on New Year’s Eve last year. She admitted that she wanted to find the best wedding photographer in Melbourne. To ensure they made the right choice. Monica asked me a sharp question: “What is your wedding photography style?”
I know that plenty Melbourne wedding photographers describe their wedding photography style as natural and candid, and so do we.
But I don’t think this cookie-cutter answer can satisfy her, as she planned her wedding day for almost 12 months, she deserved a genuine answer.
My dear reader, having come this far, perhaps you’re are a bride or a wedding photographer like me, you know I want to be her wedding photographer. I wiped my sweat on my forehead (even the weather on that day wasn’t too hot) and I was lost in thought.
Has a perfect wedding photography style ever existed?
In my entire wedding photography career, I’ve met many brides who have their own understanding of aesthetics.
Regardless of whether I describe our wedding photography as candid or classic, we risk losing one group of customers. Some brides who prefer candid wedding photography may not be fond of classical wedding photographs, as they perceive them to be outdated. Conversely, brides who admire classic wedding photography may not embrace the concept of candid wedding photography.
How do we dance in front of these different brides?
We strive to be bride-oriented wedding photographers. Drawing inspiration from Plato’s philosophical ideas, each bride holds an idealized vision of wedding photography that may not existed in real world. As humans, we recognize that only God can create a truly perfect wedding photograph for each bride. Therefore, the perfect wedding image exists solely in the mind of the bride and not in practicality.
If we can approximate each bride’s perfect vision of wedding photography, we can inch closer to capturing the ideal wedding image. Hence, I refer to this approach to wedding photography as intuitive wedding photography.
“Intuitive wedding photography,” I concisely answered Monica and Chris.
Chris’s expression revealed his curiosity as he asked, ‘Intuitive wedding photography? It’s the first time I’ve heard of that.’
I knew explaining the concept of intuitive wedding photography would take some time.
So, I said to Chris and Monica, ‘Before I explain the obscure concept of intuitive wedding photography, how about we look at some substantive wedding photography we’ve captured? So, we can build a preliminary understanding of intuitive wedding photography.
