Amanda & Marcus Wedding Photography at Sophia at The Prahran Arcade
When Amanda first sent me an enquiry about photographing her wedding to Marcus at Sophia at The Prahran Arcade, I was genuinely excited. As a Melbourne wedding photographer with more than 10 years of experience, I was surprised that I had never photographed a wedding at this beautiful venue before. So when Amanda and Marcus chose me as their wedding photographer, I marked the date with a big circle on my calendar. It was an absolute privilege to be part of their wedding day and add such an iconic Melbourne venue to my portfolio.
Before the wedding, I spent plenty of time researching Sophia at The Prahran Arcade. I explored the best photo opportunities within the venue, searched for nearby portrait locations, and even learned about its history. This stunning heritage building is one of Chapel Street's hidden gems. Originally designed by David Bromley, the venue beautifully blends Victorian architecture with elegant contemporary styling. The grand ballroom, ornate staircase, elegant balcony and timeless architectural details provide countless opportunities for beautiful wedding photography.
The wedding day arrived before we knew it. I began the morning at Marcus's house to photograph the groom's preparations. Marcus was incredibly organised. He had already arranged all of his wedding details neatly on a wooden table, including his watch, invitation, boutonnière, wedding rings and bow tie. It made styling the detail photographs so much easier during the busy morning.
I captured plenty of natural moments with Marcus, his parents and his groomsmen before he got dressed. One of my favourite moments came afterwards when Marcus wanted photographs with his lovely Border Collie. As he gently patted his dog's head, the Border Collie looked back at him with such an affectionate expression. The connection between them was so genuine that it almost felt as though the dog knew this was one of the biggest days of Marcus's life.
After finishing the groom's preparation, I headed to Sophia, where Amanda was getting ready in the venue's beautiful bridal suite.
When I arrived, her wedding dress was already hanging beside one of the elegant arched windows. The gown immediately caught my attention. Crafted from luxurious silk, the shoulders and sleeves featured delicate floral-inspired details that created a soft blooming shape. It was one of the most unique wedding dresses I have photographed, and you could immediately see the incredible craftsmanship behind every detail.
Once Amanda was dressed, we stepped onto the venue's beautiful balcony for her bridal portraits. The balcony features elegant arches, ornate architectural details and textured stone walls, creating a timeless backdrop. Warm afternoon sunlight gently flowed across her dress as the train naturally spread across the floor. Holding her bouquet softly by her side, Amanda turned slightly towards the light before looking back over her shoulder. The result was a series of elegant, editorial-style wedding portraits that perfectly complemented the sophisticated atmosphere of Sophia.
For convenience, Amanda and Marcus also held their wedding ceremony inside Sophia's magnificent ballroom. The grand chandelier hanging from the centre of the room, combined with the elegant architecture, created a stunning setting for documenting the ceremony. Surrounded by family and friends, they exchanged heartfelt vows before sharing their very first kiss as husband and wife.
As the wedding took place in May, daylight disappeared quite early. By the time we had finished the family photographs, it was already dark. Rather than travelling to another location, Amanda and Marcus wisely decided to stay at Sophia for their bridal portraits. It was a practical decision that also allowed us to fully utilise this incredible venue.
We returned to the balcony where Amanda's bridal portraits had been taken earlier that day. This time, I asked Amanda and Marcus to hold hands as they slowly walked together along the balcony. Halfway through, I invited Marcus to stand behind Amanda while she rested gently against the ornate railing. Marcus leaned forward and softly kissed Amanda on the forehead as they looked out across vibrant Chapel Street. The passing traffic and colourful city lights created a romantic Melbourne backdrop that contrasted beautifully with the venue's timeless architecture.
Afterwards, we moved to Sophia's iconic grand staircase for another series of portraits. The staircase provided an elegant setting and became the perfect finishing location for their bridal session.
Once we finished photographing the staircase, I checked the time and realised the reception was about to begin. The couple enjoyed a short break before making their grand entrance into the reception. From the bridal party introductions to the cake cutting and the couple's beautiful first dance, the evening was filled with laughter, heartfelt speeches and unforgettable celebrations.
It truly was a wonderful wedding, and I feel incredibly grateful to have documented Amanda and Marcus's beautiful day at one of Melbourne's most elegant wedding venues.
