Lynette & Justin’s Spectacular Fusion Wedding @ Rydges Melbourne
When I first met Lynette and Justin, they shared their vision for a seamless wedding day held entirely at Rydges Melbourne, located in the heart of the CBD at 186 Exhibition Street.
Because their wedding incorporated rich Asian traditions—including both Vietnamese and Chinese tea ceremonies—they knew the schedule would be fast-paced and high-energy. They requested two photographers who were not only familiar with Asian wedding customs but who could also capture the joy of their guests as much as the couple themselves.
I immediately called my talented colleague and friend, James. As a bilingual photographer I work with often, he was the perfect addition. Together, we made a solid team ready to document every moment of Lynette and Justin’s big day.
A Morning of Tradition and Blessings
The day began early with the couple donning traditional Vietnamese red Ao Dai for their tea ceremony. The room was filled with the aroma of festive food and the glow of red candles. Following tradition, Lynette and Justin offered incense at the altar to seek blessings from their ancestors for their marriage. James and I took a documentary approach, quietly capturing these sacred, soulful moments.
Next came the tea service for the parents and elders. In a touching display of affection, the parents gifted the couple with exquisite gold jewelry—a symbol of luck, health, and a lifelong marriage in East Asian culture. We were so moved by the family’s generosity; they treated us not just as photographers, but as honored guests, even inviting us to share in the delicious lunch they had prepared.
Transition to Modern Elegance
After lunch, we headed to Rydges Melbourne. The couple transitioned from their traditional attire into modern wedding wear: a stunning white gown for Lynette and a sharp suit for Justin.
Though time was tight before the civil ceremony, the hotel’s wedding coordinator was incredibly organized. By providing separate preparation rooms, James and I were able to photograph Lynette and Justin simultaneously. This allowed us to capture those natural, candid "getting ready" shots without making the couple feel rushed. Plus, since the ceremony was held on the Rydges Terrace, we didn't have to worry about travel or parking.
The "First Look" Surprise
One of the highlights of the day was the First Look in the Rydges lounge. The plan was for Justin to wait at the entrance for Lynette to tap his shoulder. However, one of Justin’s groomsmen decided to play a prank, donning a wedding dress and veil for the reveal!
When Justin turned around, ready to lift the veil, he was met with his groomsman’s face instead of his bride’s. The room erupted in laughter. James caught a truly epic shot of Justin’s hilarious reaction. Eventually, the real bride appeared, and the couple celebrated the successful surprise with a hug and a "victory" hand gesture.
Portraits at Parliament House & Hotel Windsor
With a bit of extra time, we headed to Parliament House. Its Neo-classical architecture perfectly complemented the lavish, modern style of Rydges. The bridal party was a burst of energy! The bridesmaids in light blue silk and the groomsmen in black tuxedos created a chic, timeless aesthetic.
For a final "bonus" shot, we stopped at the Hotel Windsor where their Rolls Royce was parked. Using the vintage car and the historic hotel as a backdrop, we captured some truly stunning, high-fashion portraits.
The Ceremony and a "Dip Kiss"
Back at the Rydges Terrace, a string quartet (two violins, a viola, and a cello) set the mood with Bach’s Air on the G String. Under the open sky, they shared their vows, exchanged rings, and tied the knot. As they walked down the aisle as husband and wife, guests tossed circular confetti like flower petals. In the middle of the flurry, Justin dipped Lynette for a kiss—a picture-perfect moment.
A Grand Celebration
The reception at Rydges was a floral wonderland. The stylists had installed beautiful blooming trees wrapped in LED lights, and a custom backdrop featured the couple’s initials.
The energy reached a peak when the MC announced the grand entry: Lynette and Justin entered accompanied by a traditional Lion Dance troupe. The drums thundered as the lions performed, eventually revealing a scroll wishing the couple a long and happy marriage.
After a night of heartfelt speeches, a romantic first dance, and cake cutting, the couple was still buzzing with energy. It was an honor to capture such a culturally rich and joyful celebration.
