Alina & Wes’s Intimate Melbourne Wedding Photography | The Grace Darling Hotel
When Alina and Wes first reached out to me to be their Melbourne wedding photographer, they left a deep impression. Right from our initial emails, this lovely couple emphasized that they didn't want a staged, traditional wedding photography style. Instead, they wanted their day captured casually and in the moment, allowing them to spend as much quality time as possible with their guests.
Wes also shared his love for live music, mentioning his plans to hire a cellist to play romantic melodies as Alina walked down the aisle. As a huge fan of Antonín Dvořák, I couldn't help but wonder if he would include Dvořák's Cello Concerto on the playlist. That masterpiece is filled with such rich emotion; it perfectly matches Alina and Wes’s romantic style. Blending classical cello with a 21st-century setting creates a beautiful, modern echo of the Neo-Romantic era. I couldn't wait to capture these musical moments on their big day.
In preparation, I did ample research on their reception venue, The Grace Darling Hotel. Located in Collingwood, it is an absolute hidden gem. I love the name itself—it carries such a beautiful sentiment for a newlywed couple. It makes perfect sense that artistic couples like Alina and Wes are drawn to unique, boutique venues like this. As a seasoned Melbourne wedding photographer, capturing stunning photos here is a true win-win; a promising venue gets gorgeous images for their website and social media, and the couple gets an unforgettable backdrop. Plus, it is incredibly convenient for inner-city weddings. Guests can easily hail a taxi, book an Uber, or take advantage of Victoria's accessible public transport network to get home safely.
Sunny Riverside Portraits & A Touch of Vintage Style
Time flies like a dream, and soon enough, it was wedding day. I met the couple at a beautiful gazebo just before they tied the knot. Alina looked stunning with her short hair, and Wes was incredibly stylish in a bright yellow suit paired with a peaked cap—he looked just like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes! It was a highly impressive and fashionable look for a groom. Before the ceremony, we took photos along the Yarra River—the iconic mother river that every Victorian knows and loves as it curves peacefully through the state toward the ocean at Docklands. As a professional photographer, words can't fully describe how much I love this river. It provided the perfect, meaningful backdrop for candid, natural photos as Alina and Wes strolled along the banks.
Because it was midday in the height of a warm Melbourne summer, the sunlight was quite strong. To stay cool, the couple stepped under the shade of the trees to enjoy the breeze. They leaned against an iron railing, with Wes holding Alina from behind in a classic, natural pose that I affectionately call the "spoon photo."
To capture this, I relied on my trusty prime Sony camera. I love Sony because of their incredible selection of high-quality prime lenses. While I'm not strictly loyal to any single brand camp—whether Sony or Canon—the proof is always in the final images. (Though, if you're a great photographer like my friend Nick who shoots on Canon, you can still take amazing photos, too!) Alina also brought a vintage fabric umbrella, which added an epic, My Fair Lady Audrey Hepburn vibe to the shoot. Watching them hold the umbrella together was an absolute dream to photograph.
A Musical Ceremony & A Chilled Collingwood Reception
As the ceremony neared, I found the cellist preparing her instrument. She was carefully applying rosin to her bridal wooden bow and fine-tuning her strings. I made sure to capture these quiet, candid details, including her sleek white carbon-fiber case, which makes transporting a heavy cello so much easier.
Breaking away from the traditional format where the groom waits at the altar, Alina and Wes decided to walk down the aisle together. Holding hands to the rich tones of the cello, they stepped forward as I captured the moment on a high-speed SD card. In front of their closest family and friends, they shared their vows, tied the knot, and sealed it with a kiss.
After the ceremony, instead of taking a wedding car, Alina, Wes, and their guests enjoyed a short, pleasant walk over to The Grace Darling Hotel. At the venue, I photographed all the beautiful details—the live band, the cake, and the gorgeous floral arrangements—alongside the formalities like the cake cutting, speeches, and their first dance. The entire evening was wonderfully relaxed and unstructured, making for a truly chilled-out celebration.
As night fell, I noticed the fantastic urban energy just outside the hotel, alive with neon signs and city lights. The surrounding shops cast a warm, romantic glow over the streets. I invited Alina and Wes to sneak out for a few quick night shots. They happily agreed, spinning, walking, and cradling each other in the street.
I encouraged them to simply be themselves and enjoy their freedom as newlyweds. The resulting photos turned out better than I could have ever imagined. As a Melbourne wedding photographer, I've learned that sometimes you don't need to give too much direction. If you stay observant and go with the flow, couples will surprise you. Alina and Wes truly made these photos special—not just because of the photography, but because they were completely relaxed, genuine, and comfortable in front of the lens.
