Verina & James Wedding Photography @ Blackbird Melbourne
When I first met Verina, she was looking for a Melbourne wedding photographer with an artistic documentary approach—someone who could capture genuine moments rather than overly posed photographs. She explained that James preferred a relaxed wedding day with as little staging as possible, and they wanted their photographs to reflect the authentic emotions of the day.
I still remember the day Verina visited my studio. It was around lunchtime, and conveniently, her office was only a block away from mine. Although James couldn't make the meeting, Verina happily took on the responsibility of choosing the right wedding photographer for them. She told me they were planning an intimate wedding with around 20 to 30 guests, no bridal party, bridal preparations in Southbank, a ceremony at the beautiful Old Treasury Building, and a reception at Blackbird Melbourne.
As all of their locations were within Melbourne's CBD, Verina suggested that after the ceremony we simply walk between locations instead of driving, saving time and avoiding the hassle of finding parking. I thought it was a fantastic idea. Before she left, I jokingly asked, "What about your shoes?" With a smile, she replied, "Don't worry—I won't be wearing high heels."
Having photographed weddings in Melbourne for over a decade, I know the city and its surrounding locations very well. The Old Treasury Building is one of my favourite ceremony venues, and I photograph at least one wedding there almost every month. Blackbird Melbourne, however, was a venue I had yet to photograph.
Although I had often walked past Blackbird Melbourne while exploring the city, I had never been inside. Located on Flinders Lane, the venue immediately caught my attention with its contemporary architecture, expansive windows, elegant marble bar, and sophisticated restaurant atmosphere. I had always imagined dining there one day, although I suspected it might be a little expensive for me!
Before the wedding, I spent some time researching the venue. Surprisingly, Google Maps featured plenty of food photography but very few wedding images. Curious to see the event space, I visited Blackbird Melbourne's social media and website, where I discovered an excellent 3D virtual tour showcasing the Private Dining & Events room—the very space where Verina and James would celebrate their wedding with family and friends.
On the wedding day, I began by photographing Verina during her bridal preparations. James wasn't too concerned about having his preparation photographed, which is actually quite common among many Melbourne grooms. Most simply prefer to relax and enjoy some quiet time before the ceremony.
When I arrived at Verina's apartment, she was already wearing her wedding dress. I quickly photographed the important details—the wedding rings, bridal shoes, and other meaningful items—before noticing the beautiful natural light pouring through the balcony doors into the living room. It was the perfect location for bridal portraits. Standing beside the window, Verina was illuminated by soft, warm light that beautifully highlighted the intricate textures and delicate details of her wedding gown.
Before the ceremony, James waited for his bride in the Treasury Gardens, just a short walk from the Old Treasury Building. Their first look was simple, intimate, and incredibly moving. As James saw Verina in her wedding dress, his emotions quietly surfaced. He isn't someone who openly expresses his feelings, but my camera captured a genuine tear forming in the corner of his eye. It was one of those beautiful, unplanned moments that perfectly reflects why I love documentary wedding photography.
Hand in hand, they walked together to the ceremony.
After the ceremony, we strolled over to Parliament House for their portrait session. Fortunately, we arrived earlier than most other wedding couples, meaning we had plenty of space to ourselves without waiting or navigating large crowds. Since Verina and James preferred not to be the centre of attention, the quiet atmosphere suited them perfectly and allowed us to create many relaxed, natural photographs.
Following the portrait session, we continued our walk to Blackbird Melbourne. By the time we arrived, their guests had already taken their seats. The private dining room was beautifully designed for an intimate celebration. A long banquet table encouraged conversation and connection, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is often difficult to achieve at larger weddings.
The venue's elegant dark concrete walls, stylish fabric chairs, and impressive marble bar created a sophisticated yet contemporary setting. I invited Verina to take a moment to sit and relax beside the bar. Bathed in the warm glow of the pendant lighting, she looked effortlessly elegant—almost like a Vogue magazine model.
To add depth to the composition, I photographed her through a row of wine glasses, using them as foreground elements. The result was one of my favourite bridal portraits from the entire day—a true "money shot" that perfectly captured the elegance and atmosphere of Blackbird Melbourne.
Post Story
After the wedding, Verina came back to our studio to pick up their wedding photographs. The smile on her face was impossible to hide, and she gave me very high praise. I was so glad that she was satisfied, as this is the most important feedback for a Melbourne wedding photographer.
Just a few weeks later, she sent me a message asking whether I could be her photographer again for a family photoshoot two months later with her husband and children. She also told me that she had already booked her makeup artist and hairdresser. Without a second thought, I replied with a big YES!
